A question re: gold coins

This forum is for discussing hunting and collecting US and Canadian circulation Silver Bullion Coins, other types of minted bullion, and other types of precious and base metal investments other than Bullion Pennies and Nickels.

A question re: gold coins

Postby thecrazyone » Sat Jun 28, 2025 3:42 pm

My family has some gold coins that may get passed to me. They are currently not graded or slabbed, as that part of my family would have bought them for intrinsic value, not numismatic. That said, if they come my way, what would people here recommend? Leave them as is? Have them slabbed? Other?

Unless they are known to be truly rare in the condition they exist in, I would consider them bullion and avoid the grading and shipping costs. Nothing wrong with bullion. You can look up the coins and get an idea of the rarity and value from the web.

Good point. I would do this first before sending to PCGS or NGC.

premiums on bullion are very low. you can get slabbed, MS-60+ gold for spot these days.

I would only slab if (1) i was going to sell and (2) the incremental value exceeded the cost of slabbing.

Because they came from family, I would NOT grade/slab these. Leave them as is.

If they came from a flea market or coin show, then slab away!!!! (assuming the condition and scarcity warrant it.)
