Ok, I was able to figure it out and was able to see (and hear) the talk on copper cents. For the most part, this is a good video. But it fails to clarify if people will still be able to buy rolls from banks and credit unions AFTER THE END OF PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION. In Canada, there was only a short window (roughly 5 months). The American window could be shorter or longer. Either way, buy rolls NOW!!!!!

In February, the mint struck 353 million 2025 P/D Lincoln cents:

Hoping/wondering if someone here might know the answer, because my Google-fu is failing me. Who sets mintage numbers? Is it the secretary of the treasury? Or is it more of an automated process based on average attrition of coinage and increased annual monetary supply demands?

People buying absurdly priced 2025 rolls and boxes on Ebay when they could've gone to the bank and got them at face value - ouch!  :x

I stop at lots of banks. They are not there yet. But your comment will probably come to fruition in a month or two.

Also, I am looking forward to seeing the march numbers as those were probably set AFTER trumps inauguration. Sooner or later we will see if he is serious about ending the penny

So now that coins are showing up, did it maybe sound like a good idea in Trump's head that he was stopping production, but he was actually too late for this year? After all, I doubt the mints would wait until Jan 1 to start making pennies.

There are contracts already in place, plus congress actually has to act. Trump can't do it unilaterally.

Excellent point which means there could be a few BILLION pennies by the end of the year. Therefore, I will eventually be buying them for face at banks whether or not I want them!

Wanted to capture stats before the monthly update to see if production was finally halted in April.

Currently production for 2025: 923,400,000 (413,400,000 D -- 510,000,000 P)

And to tell if it has been updated (if pennies don't move), here are nickels: 231,160,000 total.

Bill to end the cent has been introduced.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news ... e_vignette

The proposed rounding is typical: transactions ending in 1 or 2 round down, those ending in 3 or 4 round up - 5 is divisible by a 5 cent coin, 6 or 7 round down, 8 or 9 round up.

New penny figure: 1,060,600,000 (488,200,000 D -- 572,400,000 P).

At this pace, we'll likely surpass all of 2024's mintage figures around July.

Doctor, thanks for the numbers. These numbers prove that the 2025 penny is worth..........................FACE VALUE!!!!!!

Are there still a lot of fools on ebay paying well over face?

Also, I still have not seen any at all. Guess they're slow to reach my area.

I have seen one 2025 nickel so far. No pennies, or other coins.

People paying more than face for circulating coinage with mintage figures in the billion (by only April) is wild. I certainly don't begrudge anyone able to sell at the higher price though.

For those not inclined to click links, it has been announced that the US Mint has made its last purchase of one cent blanks, and will stop minting cents when they run out. Cents will remain in circulation. At some future point a plan to standardize their elimination will need to be passed in legislation. (A bill that does that has been proposed.) So get your cents while you can!

As much as I am in favor of this, I wish they would have given more lead time to Greene County. Or, maybe (hopefully) there was stuff going on behind the scenes, and they're already prepared. Sending prayers that their economy is able to diversify and pivot fairly quickly, and employment isn't impacted too much overall.

Anyone else think this is sort of the start of the end of easy entry to coin collecting?

I wonder if it'll basically just end up being like the half cent. Still legal tender in perpetuity (you could technically pay a federal fine using a big bag of half cents), but eventually pricing standards and scarcity will adjust on their own.

Possibly, but some people will pivot to nickels. There are still a decent amount of pre 1960 in bank rolls, circulation etc.

This is true, but in the world of COIN COLLECTING, people are not interested in the copper aspect. They're interested in the date, condition, scarcity etc. The numismatic value of pre 1960 is and will remain higher than the copper value of a nickel unless something crazy happens such as ten dollars a pound for copper. In that case, your "collecting behavior " will change.

With the total cost of the cent, and Canada having already led the way (among others) there can be no doubt they knew this day was coming. For them, every day (for years) of continued production had to be a gift - they should have socked away their savings and been prepared to shut down. If they weren't prepared, it's on them. I'm normally at least moderately sympathetic to a business loss, but this one doesn't bother me.
