On the subject of demonitizing coins: Canada stopped minting the cent in 2012. Banks stopped selling them to customers in early February of 2013. They were still accepted at banks in 2022, making them very valid and legal currency. I'm guessing that they are still legal today although some businesses might not honor/accept them. Looking for one of our Canadian members to chime in on this matter.

Thats a good data point.

In the UK, they retire bills often and I think pound coins. The latter might have been because someone was counterfeiting them.

I believe the EU still has their pennies.

Because its a large cost on the entire economy, not just the mint. Banks, shops, etc.

Has any US currency ever been demonetized? Not to my knowledge in the sense you mean.

But try to spend more than 10 pennies somewhere, its challenging. Or use FRNs at a stadium - sorry we only accept plastic.

TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS!
Former stock broker w/ ~20 yrs. at one company. Spoke with 100k+ people and traded a lot (long, short, options, margin, extended hours, etc.).

NOTE: ANY stocks I discuss, no matter how compelling, carry risk- often
substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) and selling short as well.

All of the above. I agree it's total BS. They always have one station for cash, but it's usually in the most inconvenient place.

I wonder how many of those are still sitting at the mints… It could be that they might be FAR RARER than the above numbers suggest. Time will tell.

If there is anyone here from Canada or who visits Canada frequently, it would be interesting to know about obsolete pennies up there now. Are they still accepted in commerce? Do collectors still keep them? Do they sell for a premium?

Hello,

Being from Québec, I believe that my situation does not reflect 100% of the Canadian perspective but here it is in my neck of the woods :

1- Pennies are no longer accepted in commerce, only in banks
2- Pennies do sell for a premium but: (1) it takes time and (2) it is only in large lot, because they are purchased by those looking for specific varieties and to make it their effort, they need a decent amount to search (or have fun with)
3- Pennies sold easily for 3x up to 3 years past their decommissionning, then it became difficult.
4- The only thing that retains and attraction are solid new rolls. NEVER OPEN THEM.
5- As for the last year of prodution, they are still a thing, but only as rolls.

If I was in the US, I would buy anyhing that is new and start selling 3-months after they have been decommissionned at 3x-5x depending... Price will probably never go up past that point, only down.

My 2 cents, hopefully it helps.
Common sense should prevail if not, misery will.

If there were no BU 64s to be found, you could sell one and make a lot of money. But then as you dumped the others the price would quickly drop low, so you might be better off melting most of them! Lol

I tried to watch THIS video. Never got it. Yes I saw a Headline about 95 percent copper pennies, but the only video was analysis of a Michael Jackson song (Billy Jean). Perhaps you sent the wrong link. Can you repost?
