Odd encounter at the bank - junk coins

There is a small town bank in my area - one where I've had some success finding silver dimes. I use them occasionally
to run coins thru their counter as well.

In the past, I'd asked about what happens to the 'junk' that doesn't make it thru the counter. The answer I got (several times)
was "we give it back to the customer". Today I found out that wasn't so. It seems that the teller I was dealing with was
keeping the junk for herself - and better yet - she is now retired.

One of the tellers got the junk out, and we began going thru it - lots of Canadian, some Euro's, some Mexican, and some other
goodies, as well as an assortment of US coins.

I also got permission to be the recipient of the junk a/o today. But the odd thing is, they want to keep the Canadian, and
the coins of the British Commonwealth (ie Cayman Islands), as well as the Euro's. The head teller told me that they have a
method of disposing of the Canadian....

What they did give me was all the US coins ($1.18), and a 1977 Italian 50 Lira coin.

ANy coins is better than no coins.

This is why I keep every magnetic Canadian coin I find. I don't trust that they'd give it back to me if it didn't make it through the counter. Some day I'll find a method of disposing of them...

I just took a bunch back to North Dakota this past week. They take them up there at face.

Well, as long as you use less than $1 worth at a time when making a purchase at most
stores. A few stores are fussy and most will be reluctant if you try to unload too many
on them. ^_- Banks either won't take them or will discount them depending on the bank.
At least that was my experience when I was a teenager.

Banks take them at face for me for I had about 130fv to unload. Also saw the kids in the process.

And of course in Canada, we take US coins no questions asked.
