1909 no VDB - 12 Found

Postby Zig » Mon Nov 18, 2013 6:38 pm

Picked up a couple bags and got a great score.
Had $11.85 in wheats total and 12 - 1909 no VDB.
See pics. I was pretty pumped.

Any time you have a 100+ old coin in your hand it's awesome. When you have several it's even better.

Awesome. It's not a very rare or valuable coin, but they're incredibly hard to find. I haven't got one in over 250,000 pennies, let alone 12.
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.

I have found 16 1909 now. 15 of which have been from large wheat dumps at my local bank.

I advise everyone to ask the bank for bags from customers vs ordering boxes. The payout in what you find on average is much better.

Actually, the payout 'average' is close to the same (but usually better). HOWEVER, the great hits are much greater, and the terrible hits (full bags of zincs) are also much worse (usually). But if you consider that getting boxes can get you a complete box of brand new shields, where returned bags almost never do, that terrible hit is usually not an issue. As long as you do not get someone else's zinc dumps, the normal bags are usually as good, or a little better than boxes, and the GOOD bags can be fantastic. Nothing like getting a $50 bag, and getting a dozen IHCs in there. I have only seen 1 IHC in boxed cent. No, I have not done a huge amount of boxed cents (only 2-3k face), but only 1 out of 250-300k cents is not great.

If you can get good customer returns off the counter, it is usually much better in the end, than getting rolled cents from brinks / lumis, or whatever armored car service your area uses.

I also am from midwest, and getting CWR rolls simply does not happen here. All branches I have access to, do not require them (they have counters), and if someone brings in their own rolls, the branches crack them, and put them through the counters. However, I have found branches that will sell me bags from the counters, and WILL accept when I bring in $50 bagged cents, ready to go.

I do agree. My main bank lets me do what I call the hand check. I run my hand through every bag, before I take it to verify contents. That insulates me from the full or almost full bag of zincs. I find probably 25% of the time I decline bag/s. The ladies even inform me now when a certain guy comes in and dumps. This arrangement seems to be best.

I am from the midwest as well and rarely see CWR. If they accept coin, most have counters and do like you say, crack them open and run them through the counters. I have not located any bank in my area that accepts pre-counted bags. I wish there was as getting rid of my zincs has always been an issue for me.
