Blank Zinc

Postby Zig » Mon Nov 18, 2013 6:32 pm

I found what I assume is a blank zinc planchet. See pics.
Thought it was a cool find.

Anyone else find one of these before? Any value in it?

I've never found a blank nor one more than slightly offset. Cool fine Zig!

Redbook says three dollars, so that's probably high.

I looked at +/- 1 million cents in 2011 and found one blank planchet.

Part of that low value has to factor in the ease with which they can be "counterfeited"

What's the weight?

I found one of these back in August. It weighed about 2.85gr +/-, so more than a stamped zinc cent, but
less than a copper one.

I sorted through a couple thousand worth and found one blank zinc, it is a cool find, after I found it I also heard that field trips to the mint would give them out to kids. I see a few of those packages like the above pic for sale on ebay, looks like 1.90 delivered is the going price for a blank zinc, but the copper planchets look to go for more.

So basically, unique, semi-rare, not valuable, cool find. I can live with that.

Here is the post I made back in Aug - includes a pic of the blank and a couple of pennys for comparison purposes - not the greatest pic, but it works.

I the weight of mine was rather odd. Yours is right on the "money" for a zinc.
