1980 Wells Fargo rolls

I was at a local bank today where they know me well. My wifes aunt is the branch manager. I asked one of the teller about some pennies. They know I go through them looking for wheats and stuff. I dont mention the copper. They usually wont take customer rolled coins at this bank since they have a counter.

The teller said I have some older looking rolls here. They are red and white Wells Fargo paper rolls. I took $20 worth to check them out. When I got home and busted one of the rolls open it was all shiney pennies from 1980. I didnt open anymore. The rolls that I can see a date on the end are all marked 1980 as well.

On the roll I opened the coins did show some spots and some of the rolls look rather worn. I guess my question here is are they worth a premium at all? Also should I go back and buy the rest? I think the girl said the older person brought in around 100 rolls like this. I was hoping to stock up a bit for the Ryedale Sniper I have on the way so I am unsure what I want to do. These wont need any sorting

Well, they're all copper. I'd pick them all up.... no sorting necessary.

I watched the movie and the ones on the table were 1980 and the close up roll was 1981 so I would open them up and see if there are any lost wheats in there. As they are not all the same date mint mark.

Also looks like the name on the roll was last used in 1997.

Just opened two more rolls and double checked the ones I could see a date on the end coin. All were 1980. I just boxed them up and put them away. I went to a BofA saturday and got some older rolls as well. They had dust bunnies where they had been crimped from being handrolled. They were all copper as well. The newest coin I found was 1979 and I found 29 wheats. I went back today to try to get more but that teller was off and the other tellers didnt have the same rolls. I will try to go back tomorow. I will also pick up some more of the 1980 rolls as well at the other bank.

Gotta be kind to a noob, but if I'm understanding your question, you're essentially asking if you should buy copper at face value or spend money on a machine so you can spend time getting cents, sorting, and dumping zincs.

It's not even a choice. Grab the copper, fast. As much as you can while you can. These things only present themselves rarely. The machine can wait and meanwhile you've got a small haul of vintage presorted cents.

Also many people on Ebay will pay a premium just for old coin wrappers or banks/companies that no longer exist or are otherwise collectible.

I already have the machine on the way. I was going to the bank to stock up on some cents to run through it. I guess I am sorta excited to get it and run some coins through it. I think it should be here by the end of the week hopefully. I will pick the rest of those rolls up tomorrow if I can. I was more curious to see if they would have more value since they are uncirculated rolls than anything. Thanks for the comments guys.

An older person brought in 100 rolls of pennies that are at least 30 years old! My first question to the teller after buying up every one of these rolls would be "Did this person also bring in any rolls nickels, dimes, quarters, or half dollars?"

Guess you don't need the machine right now.. but you will need it next week. Second question you should ask after asking for nickels through half dollars turned in by this older person is "Did they turn in any BIG dollars?" Take all the pennies.. you won't get 100% copper all the time. Also, BU OBW rolls often go for a premium.

I went back and they had another $50 worth of cents this person had turned in. I was able to make me two nice $25 boxes of the 1980 rolls with some left over. Not all of the other rolls he had turned in were the same. Some were CWR. I unrolled these rolls and noted a few modern cents but it looked to be mostly copper. I have not searched them all yet. I also found two wheats while dumping these rolls in a tub to sort later. One was a 1910 the other a 1943 steel penny that was a little rusty. I may search through the rest this evening.

I think I may let these boxes sit with the rest of the hoard for the time being. I put them in the $25 cardboard boxes I had and stored them away already.

It doesn't hurt to ask. Sometimes you find some other good stuff that way.
