Is it worth the buisness account?

Postby itsmerobbyb » Thu Jan 17, 2013 8:53 pm

So I have been getting 5 boxes per bank. About 8 banks or so, ordering ahead and not dumping where I pick up of coarse.
But I have already gotten every excuse from "you need to be a merchant" to a "7 dollar per box fee". SO I was thinking
of just opening up a small business account and order as much as I want from only a few banks instead of 8?
Then they will have no choice right? Anyone here have a cheap/free business account and if so is it worth it?
I'm thinking it might take the edge off, and I can stand in the business line at the bank too ;)

Depends on each bank's policy. There is no law or standard that says they "have to" sell you coin, regardless of what kind of account you have. Some will sell more coin to business accounts, some won't. It's entirely up to the bank. Sometimes that policy is set by the branch or even just the head teller, and may vary from one location to another. The only way to find out for sure is to ask at the branches you want to pick up at.

You may have trouble opening a business account if you don't actually have a business, and you may have more trouble if the only activity in your "business" account is ordering coin. Banks are business, and businesses are in business to make money. It's one thing to have a low-balance account that they don't make much money on. It's another to have a low-balance account that they actually lose money on (i.e. frequently ordering coin, which costs the branch money). It may or may not last; depends on the bank's policies, your relationship with them, and how much of a cost/burden your coin orders are. No way to know until you try.

Many business accounts will carry a huge monthly service charge too, so be careful.

Yes, like Nats said...they'll want some detailed info on your business, including the tax id #

Not all that tempts your wandering eyes and heedless hearts is lawful prize,
nor all that glistens gold.

And a business account isn't some magical sacred cow to the bank. If they figure out they are losing money on a business account they will cancel it just as fast as a personal account.

It's not worth the hassle if you are only using it for more coin. My opinion.

They like business accounts because they charge those businesses lots of fees. It will generally be either a large monthly service fee or it will be transactional such as charging you for each roll coming in or going out. Or maybe they will put you on analysis.. where if you leave a million or 2 in the account.. and don't do too much activity they will figure you were a good enough boy that month to avoid the fees.

If one won't, just try another. I asked my bank(the branch nearest my house) to order some halves. They said they can't order them any more. I called another branch where I order from. They ordered them and they arrived. How things are ran differ from branch to branch. One branch orders halves loose in bags. Another branch says that they can't order loose. Just keep looking til you find a branch that will work with you.

I just recently had to open another business account.
The bank wanted to see my federal tax ID number and my state articles of incorporation.
So if you don't really own a business, you may not be able to get a business account??
Now accepting direct payments through Wells Fargo bank and TD bank.

Thanks for all the advice. Sounds like its more trouble than it's worth I will try other banks and keep my low profile I think.
