You can skip the whole process of tarnishing the coins if you want and just buy a CTU of ugly coppers from me. I have plenty. I would like to see a market develop for these

You can pick up a Whitman generic cent folder (no dates, just holes) and fill it with your ugliest most corroded pennies.

Two Christmases ago I gave my brother one of these. It was truly disgusting, but still kinda cool. This all came about because when discussing pennies/coins with him one evening Mike swore that cashieres saved the ugliest coins just for him. Gave him the 'gift' and told him he's right, I talked the cashiers at a bunch of stores for the Mike coins they were saving.

Got a great laugh from the family.

Its very rare for me to see blue or green pennies. I have quite a few Canadian Red pennies however (some absolutely breathtaking ones)

I think brass tends to corrode blue, bronze tends to corrode very slightly dark green or black or red. I'm thinking saltwater will also make copper go blue.

In Alberta we have high sulfuric air content (natural gas) which means 99.9% silver tarnishes very ugly very quickly.

You probably already have most of what you will need:

A frame
Burlap or canvas as backing
Pennies
Vinegar and salt
Start with the frame.
(I spray painted my gold frame with a little
copper and teal...just for fun!)
Wrap burlap on the backboard, remove the glass
and hot glue it in the frame.
See how many pennies fit in the space.

96 for me.

(my 4th grader did the math)

Get a bunch of pennies!
They are naturally a wide range of colors...
Sort out the brightest, brownest,
blackest, whitest and teal-est ones.


Now, the science.
Take some mid-range colored pennies

and put them in a glass dish.

Add 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of salt.
Immediately they will brighten and become shiny.
Let them soak about 5-10 minutes.
Pull them out and set them on a plastic plate...
don't dry them off...

Over the next 2 hours they become slimy looking
and turn very bright turquoise--or verdigris as it is called.

Our pennies dried over night.
Arranged them on the burlap.
I let the kids decide which were brighter and didn't
care too much if they weren't exactly so.

Then hot glue them onto the burlap!
Picture perfect!
