Need an opinion on this penny

Postby J_Dodge » Thu Oct 03, 2013 9:47 pm

All

While searching rolls this morning, I stumbled on the left penny in the attached photo.

Sorry for the quality of the pic - don't have a tripod nor photo quality lighting in the basement.

The penny on the left is a 1992 D - look closely at the D, compare it to the 93D on the right (couldn't find a 2nd '92 for comparison).

To me, it looks like there is a 2nd impression below the D.

What do you think?

Thanks

JD

Let me re-phrase my question.....

Is it reasonable to say the mint mark looks doubled /"dinged" when the balance of the face side
of the coin is ok?

Hope to get to a coin shop today to get another opinion on it.

I have encountered several Lincoln Cents from the early 1990's with the same thing. I think it may have something to do with the way they were struck, because starting in 1990 the mint mark was part of the master design before reduction. When the lathe reduced the design the mint mark went along with it.

The link below shows a 1992-D much like the one described.

hard to tell what it is from that picture but it could be a bubble under the copper layer or a spot of zinc rot but I don't think it's a repunched mint mark.

Thanks for the replys....

I took the coin to the coin shop on Friday...both fellows looked at it.

The opinion I got was that the coin is indeed doubled, but that they are concerned
that the doubling could be bogus - that the coin may have been doctored by someone.

That said, I was then told to keep the coin, and sit on it for a "few years", as
this could be an example of a yet unknown mint error, and given enough time,
other examples may show up.

So I've a "maybe"....

That looks like the copper plating split.
