How to deal with gross coins?

Postby TwoPenniesEarned » Tue Nov 02, 2010 1:01 am

I tried to run a box of pennies last week that seemed to be coated with some type of disgusting powdery film. Many many coins were green and corroded. It was jamming my Ryedale so often that I had to give up on the box.

What are your guys techniques for separating out disgusting crap? I hate the idea of sending s*** through my Ryedale.

I took some of the worst looking pennies and brought them to work where I soaked them( @ 200 pennies) in a water/ acetic acid solution. 3 days later, all of them can be used as nice cu pennies, some of them were like brand new. Wished I could buy acetic acid on the outside.

When I get nasty coins from rolls I just throw them in the rock tumbler with ones I find while metal detecting.

Dump them into a jar of vinegar and baking soda, shake, and let it sit for a few days, occasionally shake to mix it up.

Just melt them, skim the crud of the top. Now you have nice clean copper. LOL

White vinegar with a little salt. Cleans up most green and/or other crud. But remember, all coins are FILTHY, and it´s the invisible stuff, e.g. viruses, bacteria that makes you sick. Wash your hands after you handle the nasty things. That great looking wheat penny could have just been sneezed on by the last owner.
