How fast does the green grow?

Postby DaMangRon » Sun Mar 09, 2014 2:53 pm

I am still a newbie when it comes to sorting and had a few questions. I got into this hobby after buying a bag of wheats to sort with my kids...and while we looked for key dates we through all the wheats in 5 gallon pails. I've now learned from reading on this site that you need to separate the ugly greens ones so it doesn't spread. How long can my buckets of wheats sit in the closet before the green stuff starts spreading?

I've started hand sorting rolls from the bank and i have been removing every copper with even a hint of green on them and storing them separately. Is that what your suppose to do? Even a dot a green on a cent needs to go in the ugly pile?

I'm also new, so I'd also like to know how quickly it spreads. Here's a link to another thread, which in turn links to other discussions on the topic of Green Gunk / Verdigris.

I have never tried to find out, keeping only clean coin (except for some early bags that need to be resorted). I'm sure it's a function of humidity and degree of seal.

I had a bunch of coppers out in my shed for several years on the salty wet coast. The shed has plenty of airflow to the outside. They were in a container that had an open top. Some of the coppers had some verdigris so I figured the disease had spread and it might be pretty bad. However, I recently repacked them and to my surprise very little had spread. So I think it takes quite a while unless the coin has some other corrosive contaminant on it. It does not get very warm here though so maybe in at a higher temperature it would get bad.
