I'll have to echo what the others say about going in multiple directions around the package with tape. You almost can never use too much unless you are trying to keep the package under a certain weight. The reinforced paper tape is strong, and you can get it in different sizes if you are looking for a certain width.
I'll agree with Nate, the duck brand clear packing tape is some pretty good stuff, you can never have enough...I get mine at an annual neighborhood yard sale for little cheaper though (6 rolls for $5)
