Went for a box 2013's and got a copper hoard

Postby TwoAndAHalfCents » Sat Mar 02, 2013 3:54 pm

One of my banks is notorious for having boxes of new zinc pennies. I quit picking up from them last year when all I would ever get were boxes of shiny new 2012-D's. I tried them again in February hoping their supply was 2013's. No such luck. I got another box of 2012-D's. I went there again today to try to get some 2013's. instead of new pennies they had a box filled with CWRs that they taped shut. At least $25 of CWRs is better than yet another box of zinc, right?

I also picked up some rolls of halves today and one of my rules of sorting is to search for silver before searching for copper. So I might not get around to sorting this box of pennies right away. i did weigh several of the rolls just to get an idea of what I got. All of the rolls I weighed came in at a little over 155 grams each. I think I just picked up a box of solid copper rolls. Too bad that branch is already closed for the day and I won't be able to make it back there until next Saturday. I'm hoping they still have a few of these made up boxes in the vault. If not then maybe they will have a new shipment of 2013's in.

Edit to include results:

This box of CWRs appears to be from someones hand-sorted hoard of copper cents. It was almost entirely 1959-1982 cents. There were two 1957-D wheats that slipped in. There were also five zincs from 1994 - 2006 in there. The 1982s had not been checked either as they were split 13 copper and 16 zinc. I also found a strange token (I'll post about that later), a 1973-S proof that has been in circulation for a while, a penny ground down to a much smaller diameter, and a few bent coins too. It sure looks like a handsorted hoard although the sorter was just a tiny bit sloppy.

I went back today to see if any more boxes or CWRs from the copper hoard were left. They were all out but had new boxes that came in. I picked up a box of shiny new 2013-D's.

Thanks for the link to the mint. Not too far from my neck of the woods. I would love to visit a place like that and see there minting equipment. It would be cool to have some Realcent.org tokens made up out of silver! Group buy?

Most of the banks in my area don't even seem to accept CWR. I'll have to check into that more though. When I asked if I could turn some in, they said no. Well that was one of them. I will probably ask them to call me if they get any in.

Most banks around here will only accept rolled coins. Banks with coin counting machines are very hard to find. It seems like many of the banks take in rolled coins and ship them off for processing right away. Sometimes I am fortunate enough to get a big batch of rolled coins before they are sent out.

It seems it depends on where you are. And even within the same city and even the same company, they can do things very differently. I will for sure be asking my banks what they do. I thought I knew but maybe I'm wrong?

That appears to be where they are from. All of the rolls were marked that way. Too bad I didn't open the box as soon as I picked it up. The branch was already closed when I realized what I had and I had to wait a whole week before I could return for more. This particular branch has a lot of small business customers and they seem to move their coins quickly. I don't know of they turn around the wrapped coins to their business customers or if they just ship them off. But they were all out coins from the Trawick Trust when I went back.

Won't accept rolls at all? Wow! How many rolls did you tell them you wanted to turn in? I can't imagine any bank saying no to rolled coin unless it's a huge amount.

I can, assuming they have a machine. Why risk taking in steel slugs?
