Just thought I'd add a little note to this thread. So far this year I have gone through a little over 2,100 half dollars (a bit over $1,050 face). The grand total of silver received from dozens of banks was just two 40% halves. Ouch. Wish I had a time machine and could go back 10-12 years. I'd take about a month off work and just load up on silver. Oh well...

I meant to add that about a week ago I was asking for Ike dollars and a teller had exactly 100 of them. Of course I took them.

They were in the same hard plastic holder that the person used to bring them in. It was colored red and had room for five rolls of 20 coins each. It looked like something a teller might have, except that you don't see many Ikes around these days.

$207.50 in halves- one 40%er (1968). It's rather funny- I bet I looked at the date 3 or 4 times to make absolutely certain that I found a silver coin in the wild. Haven't seen too many lately.

Last week when I went to the bank, they said they accidentally ordered a $500 box of halves. I took $200 at that time (see above). Since there was one 40%er in the bunch, I decided to go back today and get the other $300.

This time I got a 1944-D Walker. It was the first pre-1964 half dollar that I've found anywhere since 10/26/10 (over 7 1/2 years ago).

Also in the bunch was a two-tailed Kennedy half. This was likely taken by cutting out two real halves and putting the tail sides together. Whomever did this did a fantastic job!

I found one that came apart and one half had a Mexican coin on one side and the kennedy half on the other side.

Hey Saabman:

I'm assuming the boxes you go through each have $500 face. Is that correct?

Also, do you have a total (over perhaps the last year or year-to-date if that is easier) of how many boxes you've gone through and how many 40%ers and 90%ers you've found? (It would take me a long time to manually add up everything you've posted)

One other thing- how many different bank branches do you go to for your halves?

@ reyclersteve -

Yes, they are all $500 boxes; I used to keep a spread sheet with all the totals but it's been a couple years since I did that; I use one bank branch for pick up and they are really good to me. They order 3 boxes a week and allow me to pick up 1 box at a time. It's all about personal relationships with the pick up. There is only one CU in town that has a coin counter. They have 5 or so branches and I spread out dumps between them. I hope that helps!

First time for silver half hunting. Please tell me if this is typical for a search of $90 face value. There are some very shiny coins with few scratches, but I don't own a coin shop so trying to sell them would be hard. Anyway, skunk.

That looks about typical for me. There were no halves produced dated 1975. 1971 and 1976 are by far the most common coin to find. Good luck finding some silver!

Thanks for confirming. It will be a happy day if I ever find even a 40% Kennedy among the halves. I just have a few ounces of silver now.

Thanks for the info. It seems like you have been doing fairly well for a while now. Some banks are charging clients to order halves now. I think it was something like $10 a box. Hopefully that won't happen to you.
