Can you tell me what this is? Rarity/oddity/one of a kind?

No one can tell me. I have taken it to shows, and the best explaination is tha someone hammered 2 pennies together. I have tryed to replicate it in this manner, but nothing close. It is extra copper with the obverse design struck into it. 1973d.

Any help? Value?

Wow that is pretty bizarre. I'm no expert, but my best guess would be that this happened after it left the mint. I've never seen an error coin look anything remotely close to this.

Thats definately PMD. The xtra metal behind abes head is actually metal that has been moved. I can see the scrape marks and the lack of detail in abes head. It actually looks like it was glued to something and someone pryed it off and scraped it doing so. JMO.

My theory is that they took two pennies, blow torched one side until glowing hot then pressed them together in a vice.

It looks like it's been through a pretty hot fire. House or building, my guess. I've seen similar damage, long ago. Not coins, something else.

are you sure it's extra copper and not some kind of glue?
it looks like 2 cents were glued together and got seperated. Try soaking it in water for a few days and see if it will come off with your fingernail.

This is what is commonly called a "glue job". Some glue was applied to the surface of this cent and another cent was pressed into it while the glue was still soft.

You can see part of abe's head through the middle if you look close.

Glue isn't the answer I don't think.

I can't tell from the pictures... on the "ON" ... are the letters raised or impressed?

well, if it was stamped at the mint with the reverse on the front, the "on" wouldn't be on that side of the building but the other side. It also looks as if the pillars of the memorial are reversed, the pillars indented instead of standing out. if that makes sense only why I see that happening at the mint is if two pennies were in the press at the same time, but how can u prove that happened at the mint and not somewhere else, say a garage with a press?
