100 year old man with penny rolls in line at the bank.

Howdy all! I was in line at the bank the other day and I was just looking around and see the guy behind me has a bag full of penny rolls and a few nickel rolls and a dime roll. I wouldn't have thought too much about it but this guy was at least 100 years old. I don't even know how he was able to hold all those rolls in his hands without tipping over. The only thing I could think about was that there was nothing but 100 year old coins from his piggy bank that he started saving from the 1920's. We finally got to the front of the line. I let the old guy go first so I could keep my eyes on those rolls I knew were just chock full of Indian Heads, Buffalos, and some old silver. I got lucky and got the same teller that he just left all those beautiful rolls at. I didn't want to sound too excited when I asked the teller for some coin rolls. I calmly said "I think I need just about as much change as the guy that just left gave you". I think it was about $40 worth all together. I couldn't get back to my car fast enough. I couldn't even wait to get home. I had to open them immediately. I couldn't believe my eyes! Nothing! Not one old coin. Roll after roll. Nothing! How could this 100 year old guy end up with nothing older than a year 2000 coin in all those rolls? Guess you can't judge a book by its cover or a coin by its wrapper (or owner). There was nothing else left to do but roll them back up and cash them in at my other bank. Hope none of ya'll were behind me in line and got stuck with those rolls like I did But ya know... it was exciting for a moment, and I guess that's why I do this.

I agree with you. That's why I said you can't judge a coin by its owner I've been a novice collector for quite some time too and will be collecting till I'm at least a 100 and one day I will be the 100 year old guy with a bunch of coin rolls in line at the bank.

Honesty. Yep them CWR's are not always winners...I did the same a few years ago...$900 in CWR's...Not only could the old fella not count, most of the rolls were overfilled, but he couldn't see either....nickels in the quarter rolls, pennies in the nickel rolls and dimes in the pennies...no silver and the copper pull wasn't very good either....If he was in line in front of me today, I would buy his rolls....you just gotta do it....one day it may pay off.

I love your thought on this. You are exactly right. I bought $25 in pennies at the bank yesterday and I got a brand new box with all brand new pennies in it. I guess I didn't win the jackpot with that box, but just like the casino, I will be back. I just hope that I do better in my hobby than I do at the casino

Far too true...i've learned my lesson and am much happier gambling with my sort through the pennies.
