This coin is, by far, my favorite coin.

I'm trying to complete my collection, but be realistic while doing so. That said, I don't know if I'll ever own a 1916-D. I'd love a graded one to know it's legit, but I know that for the $500+ that is being asked for it, I could do so much more with that money.

Yesterday, as an early Xmas gift, my wife got me the 1928, 1928-D, and 1928-S. They were in a 3-pack at an antique store. She paid $14 for all 3, which I thought was ok, since the 1928-D is a semi-key date.

Any other fans of this coin?

Always loved Merc's! Beautiful design. My best one is a 1916 in MS-67.

Whenever I bought 90% dimes, I always separated them from the Roosy's. I have bags and bags of them.

Is it worth it to try to buy a 1916-D that's not already graded?

If you can examine the coin in person and you know what you're looking at.

A few counterfeiters out there have added their own "D".

Funny story about my wife involving Mercury dimes. Before you read this, let me say, she is a VERY smart woman. REALLY!!!

So I bought some junk 90% bags from one of the big dealers several months ago... Can't remember if it was APMEX or JMBullion, but whatever. I got the bags and was pawing through, counting, making sure the count was right (it was actually a couple over, probably due to wear and the bags being sold by weight) When I spotted that pretty head, I called out to my wife, "HEY!!! There's a Mercury dime in this one!"

She's a smart woman... let me remind you....

But she looked over .... God bless her.... and said....

"But I thought they were supposed to all be silver..."

I was at an antique store recently, and they had 3 coins in 2x2's labeled, in caps, MERCURY DIMES.

They were Barber dimes..

Had a Merc collection (everything except the 16-D, of course) but eventually sold it several years ago. I regret that because I can now afford a low grade 16-D.

You can easily purchase near complete sets on eBay for under $300, some even offer the whole set for about a grand. Which brings up a question - should a complete set include the 42/41 overdate? I say no.

I also collect Mercury dimes among other coins, and agree they are really nice. The 16-d is one I would only buy graded, because there are so many fakes out there. Congrats on the Christmas gift!

To coindood's point, I've seen the "complete" sets, but as has been mentioned by myself and others, it really sucks that people mod the 1916 nowadays.

No. A complete set would not include 'mistakes'.

And yet the Whitman Classic album has holes for the 42/1 and the 1945 micro S. Don't care for that.

I completed my buffalo nickel book and there's a glaring hole for the 3-legged 1937-D which I have no plans on buying.

The mercury dime is what got me started in coin collecting. Back in 1963 I was six years old and the tooth fairy left a mercury dime under my pillow after I lost a tooth. Compared to the Roosevelt dime the merc was so beautiful and I couldn't take my eyes off it and wasn't about to spend it. Every day my mother would give me a dime for milk and cookies at school and I always hoped she would hand me another merc but I don't recall ever getting another!

Every single one I have came from either relatives that passed or I've bought. I've never seen a single one in circulation nor found one with my metal detector.

Funny, but I've always considered the Peace dollar as a Mercury dime on steroids!!!
