I go through spells when I don't carve but as the winter sets in I have been getting back into it. I like this one that I just did a week or so ago so I thought I'd share. I changed the buffalo into the turtle and through in the fish for added effect.

If one wanted to start carving coins for fun lets say.... What's the cheapest route besides a hammer and nail?

Probably a rotary tool, some type of wearable magnification, and a respirator. Although you can't get real good quality without hand gravers, or a power graver. You can get hand gravers fo pretty cheap, you just have to learn to sharpen them properly.

Wow. Inspired, I broke out my Dremel and a few tiny jeweler bits I've never found use for before. The results were... well... ugly. Kudos to those of you who have the steady hands and other required talent to pull this off!!!

My first 10 coin carvings looked like someone had laid them on a train track and got run over by a train.

Here are a couple more I did recently that I have for sale on fee-bay at the moment. An "NSA troll" and "Spirit of the Hawk".

I got 128 bucks for the hawk. Just about the most I have ever got for any of my carvings. 8-)

Is that your work? It is a good rendition of a classic design.

No, an old wood carving friend of mine starting dinking around a few years ago and I gave him a bunch of nickels... He's got one of my BU 1936's. He's doing gold inlay on it... When I get it I'll post a pic out here... no eta... The guy is a true artist, travels the world taking classes. This doesn't even come close to his work. He's one of those carvers that makes things lifelike... Does great gun work also.
