Seems the Old Man on Pawn Stars is also a penny hoarder (per this nights episode). But.....he might need some work seeing some closeup shots of his buckets held shield pennies and zincs!!
But this is national folks......we're ****ed.

I just caught this on the second run tonight. I agree my coppers don't usually shine like that either...
Now someone just needs to go in and sell them a Ryedale and I guarantee you it would be game on then.
I don't catch the Pawn Stars much any more. We had some friends that went out for vacation and a director asked someone in the line that was waiting to go through if they wanted to be on TV? They had an "item" they wanted someone to take in and act like they were wanting to sell. Kind of ruined it for me. He claimed it is common knowledge out there that they were about broke due to the recession in 08 and the History Channel saved their butts, but who would know these days. Sounds like a tourist trap and money pit to me.

I was only watching because I heard someone was selling some rare NES games on the show.
Well, the show did point out some things we know already:
* Copper pennies bring in 2 cents each for melt value.
* The Old Man can't scrap them.....yet. Rick points out that it's federal law that prohibits destroying pennies, when in reality, it was a regulation.
But, a 8 gallon bucket holds $500 in pennies?

They say that a lot of the show is staged. It's never turned me off though, they do show some pretty cool stuff.

Any one catch the "name" of the episode? I have not watched in about a year, but would like to catch this one.

The episode is called "room and hoard". I just watched it on-demand.
It looked totally staged. Too many shiny pennies and no way did the old man move those buckets.
I would bet the buckets had false bottoms and just a layer of pennies at the top.
I wonder if the old man is a RC lurker now.

I'd say very close,
a single gallon packed right is $60 x 8 = $480

How would we ever know?

Agree - I'm getting about $60 in a gallon water bottle, shaken down well.

How can he be on here when he's playing solitaire all the time?

I saw the episode last night and I took it as a elbow ribbing to cent hoarders. A person can't take
anything too serious with these so-called "reality" shows but I did get a good chuckle over all the zincs
that stuck out like sore thumbs. It's just entertainment and that's all it is.
Their cohorts from Iowa were in my neck of the woods last summer and after they left the rumor was
going around that staging was involved. How much I don't know and not totally certain if the rumor
was credible but it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

Real?
It?
Y? (would you ever believe it was for real????)
Of course it's all faked. All of those shows are staged. They draw people in, yet "scripting" them and staging the events... and advance prepping the experts they consult... are much cheaper per episode than traditional (pre-reality shows) television. But heck, I still enjoy watching them during my breaks at work... they are informative.
Can you just imagine how many silver coins and rare Lincoln cents would be found on each episode of Bayou Bubba and his Everglades Kin Roll Hunters?

Instead of a still, they would have a home-built contraption that sorted cents four times faster than a Ryedale... and they would NEVER show the drudge work of pick up banks and zinc dumps.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. So far we've had news reports and reality tv cover penny hoarding. I think it's nothing to be concerned with. Just continue to sort and it'll be okay

As hilarious as that is, you might want to go ahead and get that name trademarked or something. It seems these days they can make a "Reality" TV show about anything possible.
For starters: 'Amish In The City', 'The Littlest Groom', don't forget the "Real" housewives of
Atlanta, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Beverly Hills and coming this fall.....Chatanooga, TN

Also do you think people watch that show trying to find ideas on how to work for a living?
Nope, they watch it with the same dead-eyed-stare that is common to all tv. Very few get "inspired" by tv. More like the same effect as taking a Valium.

I figure most get-rich-quick idealists have also seen other episodes where rare books, antiques and signed sports equipment, etc. get appraised for hundreds or thousands of dollars. My guess is they'll go dig around Goodwill and flea markets for that instead of the reported $0.01 cent profit on a penny.

With Storage Wars, storage facilities actually reported that their auctions saw a massive attendance spike after the series began to air.

Buying "get rich quick" storage facilities is pretty much the exact opposite of the work required to hoard cents.
No one is going to do "work" as a result of tv. Try to cash in on a quick scheme: YES. Do work: Never.

A couple around here report half their calls are people asking about (extremely rare) storage auctions. What a pain for them.

Bering Sea Gold had a run in of folks inquiring how to start mining in Nome. So much demand actually got a disclaimer written into the end of the new episodes saying how dangerous it was and it wasn't a get rich quick scheme.
