I just found a dime in a penny roll... How in the world does this happen?

Over the past 5 years I've found 2 silver dimes in penny rolls.
The dimes in penny rolls seem to come in runs. I rarely find 1 dime in a box, In my experience there is usually more.

I'll probably never find another silver. The odds of finding 2 silver dimes in penny rolls for a hand sorter has got to be astronomical

Those pre-made tubes that are used in coin sorting machines 'Coin-tainers' have a nasty habit of counting dimes as pennies. I have found far more dimes in these types of roll, up 2 or 3 per a roll in some cases
Also dimes tend to darken and people mistake them for dimes.
And finally people just dont care- its a coin and its worthless to them. I have seen rolls with 55-65 pennies that looked like people just stuff coins into rolls just to get rid of them with running out of rolls.
Joys of customer wrapped coin!

Finding one dime in a penny box is pretty common for me. I've only ever found one silver dime in a penny box in my history though.
I'm also proud to say that I've found a silver dime in my nickel sorting.
In Canada, we get quite a few of the oversized British pennies in penny and nickel rolls, and an unusually high number of five pence in dime rolls.

The dimes i've found are "rusted" and look like pennies on a casual glance.

The rusted ones were probably cashed in by someone who metal detects. I find dimes in bags quite often but haven't found a silver one yet.

This year I've been finding them in the String rolls. 4 in one box this week. And they're shiny new dimes. No silver.
CWR's from the credit union usually contain the dirty dimes.

I have found several dimes in penny rolls. Last week I found a back off of a Swiss made watch.

As the title of the thread states...."Bizarre Find... Yet not rare"
agreed!
Dimes in boxes not often...dimes in bags often.

A couple of months ago I picked up $12 in hand rolls from the credit union. One roll was all dimes. I figure that someone didn't have a green dime roll and just used the penny one instead. No silver, but I will take it.

I found a micro SD card in a bag of dimes. Just facebook type pics of a high school crowd. No secret spy docs, no nudies, I was disappoint.

The best (or worst) was 16 dimes (canadian) in a roll of US pennies in Canada.

I am up to 57 dimes so far, and intend to keep track. Brings a smile to me each time I find one, and while not changing copper percentage, a slight rise in bottom line!!

My best is 180 dimes and 1 quarter in a bag of pennies.
Thats a $16.44 profit on the bag. Paid for gas.
Next time at the same bank, 0 dimes. Must have fixed the coin counter.

That's where all those little sob's go when I am dumping dimes. One of the reasons to quit dime sorting. They were averaging 1-2 per box, but losing 100+ dimes per $1,000 does not make it worth it. Fix the darn coin machine already.

On the other hand, I did enjoy finding them in penny rolls.

I had roll with 30 dimes and 20 pennies once. All 30 were together, how dumb can you be.

I get one every now in then in rolls but your right, bags are the way to go and dimes and sometimes nickels and the occasional quarter show up. I guess the tellers do not empty the bags real well before reattaching them to the machines.
Score!

I found a silver dime in a penny roll once. Still my favorite find so far in roll searching.
