2009 nickles

Postby saltydecks » Sat Dec 17, 2011 8:53 pm

Found my second one yesterday. My grandfather was cleaning out his pockets... tossed the change on a table, and like always when somebody does that, I was on it like a pack of hungry wolves... ok, maybe not that bad... Anyways. no silver.. no wheats... but there was a 2009 nickle, now I have 2!

Went to a coin shop the other day to ask if they had any... they looked at me like i hadn't a clue, don't think most people realize how rare those things are.

I found one in $16 of CWRs couple days ago. That's only the second one I've found all year. They are hard to find in circulation.

2009-D dimes are tough too.

I ve been sorting for about 2 months now, I ve gone through about $1500 in boxes (plus any pocket change) and have found 11 warnicks and probably 65- 70 2009s (I think all of them are D mints), 2 1950D, 1 1939D, 1 1991 proof, 6 buffs and a pretty cool hobo. I feel pretty fortunate to find so many 2009ers along with a good mix of older nicks as well.

^^ I've been sorting Nicks for 2+ years and still haven't found a 50D.

Back on topic - 2009s - I usually find 3-5 p/box. I've put together a couple of rolls of circulated ones, both P and D mint. 2009 dimes are a little easier, but not much. I keep all of both that I find.

I've only found two of each (nickel and dime). I think they were all D...
TEDANDCAM you should sell/auction a 50D on here! I for one would like to get ahold of one.

My only attempt so far at searching for silver dimes in CWRs was a $40 skunk but I did find a 2009-P and a 2009-D. Maybe I should search for those too if they are so hard for everyone to find.

I will think about that. I have no idea what it might be worth. I seen there were only 2+ million produced. 3+ million of the 1939d. If I decide to, I will PM you. If anyone has any "idea" as to what a 50d is worth please post it. I would say they are in fine condition.

I stopped saving '09 D's after I had two rolls worth. It only took me about $300 in nickels to fill the two rolls, so I'm surprised they are so scarce in some of your areas.

I still have yet to find an 2009. I've bought $20 in bank wrapped customer coin every week or two for the last year and a half. I've found plenty of silver, a couple buffaloes and one V but still no 2009. Maybe I should go to another bank and order a Brinks box.

I've pulled about $8fv of war nickels this year and just found my first V. I keep everything 59 and older but I have to say I haven't paid attention to 2009 what is special about 2009? Just low mintage?

I saw my first 2009 nickel in one of the few rolls I got yesterday, but I didn't think to set it aside. Aside from that, I save any 2009 dime that I come across because they just seems to be so scarce as it is. But I am glad that I am not the only one here... I have to tried to explain to others around me that the 2009 dimes (and nickels) are scarce and when I tell them they made a little under 50 million for the Denver dimes... I always get the, " ...Only 50 Million? "

The only people I have convinced are my dad and an old uncle, after I took his jar of "silver" change and showed them the piles of 2008, 2010, and 2011 dimes when we only managed to get a couple of 2009s!

I got my FIRST 2009 Nickle (Denver) from a String roll today, pretty nice shape all 5 steps are visible.
I've been looking for one for the last 2 years.
I'm going to keep every one I find.

I still haven't seen an '09 Dime outside a coin shop (yet).

2009 was a totally low mintage years for pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters. You may want to research just how much of a low mintage there are.

i.e. I've search over 160,000 pennies and have only found 250 coins, and this was spread over 4 different varieties. The fewest pennies i'm finding have to do with the presidency year, the most is the early year. I haven't looked in mint counts but I suspect that the denver mint is not well represented in my area. I've gone through 4 boxes of nickles and have found less that 10.

The numbers just aren't there in my area at all. So I'm just keeping them in the hope that something will be come of it in the years to come.
Don't look back. Something may be gaining on you.

Neither a penny or a nickel is worth face value anymore.

I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger.

Man, my area is LOUSY with those 2009 cents. They're EVERYWHERE. Not so with the nickels and dimes.
EDIT: However, the 4 types are the lowest mintage cents since the wheat years. To be specific, they have the lowest mintage since 1955-S, with 44.6 million.

I just realized that the 09s were so rare a few weeks ago, and thought I would start looking for them in my nickels. So far, I've found 1. I have a couple coffee cans of nickels accumulated over the last couple of years, so I might go through them sometimes to see if I can find any more. Happy Hunting!

Sorry, I’m acronym deficient; what does "KSA" stand for?
