Tonights find... my BEST FIND EVER - 1914-D XF-AU?

Postby NHsorter » Thu Dec 01, 2011 10:53 pm

Holy crap, am I pumped! I am not physically jumping up and down yet because I know that there are fakes out there, but man is my heart racing. This one shot out the zinc side of the Ryedale tonight, as most really old wheats do. I put in on the gram scale and got 3.08 so I think that is a good sign. Could this be real? Should I send it in to get graded? I have never sent in a coin so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Alright, a vote of confidence from Doc kinda pumps up my excitement about this one! I am not a numi guy, so this is going to end up being converted to some sort of PM's. I just need to decide if I should slab it first.

After further drooling and gawking, I have noticed that the Obv and Rev don't seem to line up exactly. Seems like they are turned just a couple degrees off from one another. I scanned through a couple of my teen wheats and I saw a couple other ones that seemed to have the same deficiency. Could this be an indication of a fake?

Also, passed the magnet test as expected. Can't think of anything else to check. Off to try to calm down and get some sleep!

It seems that honest 14-D's mintmarks have that slight "down to the right" tilt.....so does your coin. Compair it to PCGS 14-D's listed on eBay.

Shouldn't be anything to worry about. Slight alignment errors are relatively common. Rotation of 15% or more is typically considered an error.

Here is the D under magnification. You can see the coin is somewhat dirty. I think we have a powerful loupe somewhere around here where I work so I'm gonna try to get a real good look at it later on and compare it to some other pics online.

Thanks again for your input Chris. Thanks for the link Joe and thanks for the clarification on the alignment Verbane. You have all been tremendously helpful. I have a LCS that I have made a few purchases at so I might swing in there tomorrow to see what he thinks as well. Right now I am thinking that this is going out to get slabbed.

The spacing looks pretty good. I've seen the better fakes but they have a wider space between the the "9" and the second "1". The only other thing that I've read about 1914D fakes is that they somehow glue on a "D" mintmark to a 1914P instead of altering the 1944D. I guess the 1944D uses a different style of "D" and the experts catch that pretty fast.

COOL BEANS!

Wow Congrats! Looks legit to me. Send her in and get it graded. That looks to be XF40 or XF45. Dont think you will get an AU grade on it but its always worth a shot. If you get AU grade you are talking some big money.

I just posted it up on the tracking thread. I have all of my pre-40's finds from this year sitting in some tupperware containers right now so I should sit down and type them all in. I always intend to post to the tracking threads, but I am too busy sorting!

One of the top 10 best finds on the forum! Congrats :D

As far as I can see, there is everything right with the coin. It is worth getting it graded. If you need some help with this, I am a PCGS and NGC authorized dealer. If you want to convert to PM, I can also do that for you.

I think its real. i mess with Lincoln a lot and it doesn't show signs of a fake . its going to need a pure acetone bath and will likely grade in the au category probably 55. i can send it in to ppcgs also which is your most bang for your buck. just don't rub other with a rag. put it in a glass with pure acetone and let it sit. then pat dry
