Those two items in the thread title are pretty broad, but in a prolonged grid-down situation, keeping your food sources from being pillaged and keeping your possessions in your homestead from being stolen are pretty big deals.

Personally, I'm intrigued by the possibilities in growing root vegetables such as carrots, turnips and parsnips and hope to try my hand at sweet potatoes. Pillagers can't take what they can't find.

It is my understanding that using a wasp spray, rather than any other type of insect/bug spray, makes a good self-defense spray. It is more likely to make contact with the eyes as opposed to a pepper spray that comes out differently and your aim must be more accurate. Plus it is easy to buy and can be used for its original intent if necessary, so it is multi-purpose.

Lots of dogs and cat disappeared in European country a few days after the war begun (WWI and WWII), dogs and cats also completely disappeared in Japan during World War II.
