Anyone know if the "Historic Resources Act" allows him to keep it, or receive renumeration for it?

What a wild find.

I wonder if someone could have intentionally placed it there recently to try and stir up interest. An example could be someone who already has real estate nearby that would be interested in selling.
Former stock broker w/ ~20 yrs. at one company. Spoke with 100k+ people and traded a lot (long, short, options, margin, extended hours, etc.).

Please note that ANY stocks I discuss, no matter how compelling, carry risk- sometimes substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) as well.

Yeah, there's a bunch of ways it could have gotten there, and being dropped in the 1420's is probably the least likely. Still a pretty cool find.

Not sure when coin collecting became a dominant thought in the minds of people handling gold, but I doubt it was in the 1400s. That coin could have been (and probably was) in circulation (or in someones treasure chest) for a hundred or two hundred years or more before it found its way to where it was found. An exciting find, and seemingly valued in that condition at well over $1000, but without other supporting finds it says nothing about early western exploration.
