Neat Little 400 Year Old Piece

Postby rsk1963 » Tue Dec 17, 2013 10:22 am

My friend came to me recently with this, looking for prices/whether he should get it authenticated etc. I told him what I thought, and then said I would post it here, and see what the other jurors had to say about it.

Ireland, Elizabeth I (1558-1603), Third Coinage (1601-2). Hammered coinage.

The shilling should be Billon composition, but this apprears to be copper/bronze? Could be the coloring from the scan since billon is only 40% or less silver, but I would expect a grayer color.
Strike and almost perfect roundness are setting off some warning bells.

I'd like to see some close up pics out of the flip.

edit to add: I don't believe this is a miss-identified denomination. The 1601 1/2penny and penny should have the date flanking the Harp.

Indeed, which is why it's here to be honest.

I will say that his late father inlaw (he being 73 now) had a massive collection including complete unc sets of morgans/peace/Bens (FBL of course), along with 200 or so pre 1900 gold coins and another 4 or 5000 pieces with about a third being from the 1700 & 1800's. And so it's authenticity is slightly more "believable" for a lack of better words because of the other amazing things he has in his collection, but yes the "niceness" of the piece, set off some warning bells in my head as well (for a convoluted story short).

lol, I'll ask him if I can get some coinporn, for the addicts around here. He has a Birds over (Chinese silver dollar) that I've asked him to get certified.
