Finally had a chance to get to the bank. Took in the ripped dollar bill I found a few weeks ago.

The nice lady behind the counter informed me that any bill that qualifies for exchange must have
three corners and both serial numbers.

Alas, I had two corners and one serial number......

Great minds think alike.

Good to know. I always thought 50% of the bill was enough. Now what am I going to do with all those Benjamins I cut in half and stuffed in the back of my sock drawer?

I chalk that up to 'bank policy' and not Fed policy.

BEP mentions no such requirement, in fact the pieces don't even need to be contiguous, just 50%+

see: https://www.bep.gov/services/mutilated-currency-redemption

What is considered mutilated currency?

Mutilated currency is currency which has been damaged – to the extent that: (1) one-half or less of the original note remains; or (2) its condition is such that its value is questionable. Currency notes can become mutilated in any number of ways. The most common causes are fire, water, chemicals, and explosives; animal, insect, or rodent damage; and petrification or deterioration by burying.

What is not considered mutilated currency?

Unfit currency for redemption is currency which is unfit for further circulation because of its physical condition such as dirty, defaced, limp, torn, or worn. Unfit currency should not be forwarded to Bureau of Engraving and Printing for redemption, but may be exchanged at commercial financial institutions.

More: https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-31/subtitle-B/chapter-I/part-100/subpart-B/section-100.5

Here is the part where most folks cite 51% of the bill needed for redemption. not sure how that evolved into 'three corners and both serial numbers'.

General. Lawfully held mutilated paper currency of the United States may be submitted for examination in accord with the provisions in this subpart. Such currency may be redeemed at face amount if sufficient remnants of any relevant security feature and clearly more than one-half of the original note remains.

You’re at least 1/6th of the way there with the balls and cash.

Trying to get in the last scavenges of the year.

On a nice afternoon ride I saw a golfer looking along the fence for something he lost. Showed him a nice Easter egg in my pocket
but he said it wasn't the one he was looking for.

And then along the path I saw an old dude poking bushes with what looked like salad tongs. Drat, competition.
