The scrapyards in San Antonio tell me it's against the law to recycle anything metal from a railway bed...spikes, tie plates, etc. They won't take it. Too bad because there is a track near my home and hundreds of pounds of loose metal strewn along the line within easy walking distance. I guess if it were open season on spikes at the recycler, some enterprising individual could start pulling them out and selling.

A lot of places want some sort of "proof of ownership" for anything rail-related. Can't say I blame them. People steal copper wire and pipes out of houses and power substations, what's to stop them from stealing steel from active rail lines if there is a market for the metal...

Hardly worth mentioning but took in 14 lbs of steel today that was scrap from job. Also had 7 lbs of UBC. Price for steel was down 2 cents/lb from Feb of this year.

Picked up about 2 pounds of mangled half inch copper pipe mixed in with crushed stone in a new parking lot.

We do roofing and remodels. There is TONS of scrap metal on old "hot tar" roofs. Lead, copper, aluminum, steel. When we tear off a roof, I always get the copper & lead. I let the guys keep the aluminum, and anything else.

Best I scored of late was somewhere around 300 lbs. of lead off one roof about 4 weeks ago. A buddy of mine recycled enough copper off an old Post Office job to pay for his wife to take a cruise to Alaska. About $2,000.00.

If you use propane, always stop and look for propane grills in the back yards of abandoned/foreclosed homes. They are still there about 50% of the time with the propane bottle still attached.

Dang! This reminds me to go back to one roof and ask the owner if I can have the old motors from his obsolete air handling units!!

It all adds up!

When I open a can of orange juice concentrate I throw the steel lid in my pile.

Today I scrapped a trailer tongue jack with a heavy angle iron bolted to it. About 15 pounds worth of steel.

$400.00 a ton cut into 2 foot lengths.

400 bucks would pay for a cheap plasma cutter. Got a 220 genny?

I got a demo of a surprisingly capable 110V plasma cutter with a built-in compressor a couple weeks ago. Cute little thing  Price was about $700 though.

I just took a part time job changing locks and taking pictures of foreclosed property for banks - don't worry I haven't gone over to the dark side of the force, lol. They guy says that anything not part of the house or nailed down is abandoned property and I can scrap it! I'm getting a light truck soon for sure!

That's really good news. I've been in a lot of forclosed homes and you'll probably make more money scraping and reselling furniture than you will from your job. I saw one recently that had a scrap SUV left in the backyard (and it was old enough that it didn't need a title to be sold as scrap).

Happy hunting!!

We have turned a new chapter at my little roofing company. We are going to scrap every piece of metal that comes off all roofs. The wife is on-board to drive the truck to the scrap yards.

Yesterday, I picked up about 5 pounds of old nails (cheap steel) and maybe 3 pounds of aluminum flashings. I am going to take one of my 35 gallon plastic drums and cut the top off it. Then paint "metal only" in English and Spanish. Should bring in a lot more metal.

Four 4" HVAC storm caps (aluminum) equal to about 6 pop cans each.

Two small fan motors for the copper.

Left three LARGE refrigerator compressors on the roof for I did not know if the oil was toxic. I learned it is not, so I will go get them tomorrow. (more copper & steel)

Darn! I need a bigger yard to hoard all this crap until I am ready to take it to the scrap yard.

I free lance for a TV Station for sporting events. The Station provides a cooler of drinks for everybody.. and they all get tossed in the trash, so i bring a bag to work and crush the cans and take them home. I get 10-15 cans a game, 10 football games this fall, that's a maximum of 150 extra cans. :D
